news reader cannot see articles

Hmm.  Certainly you can rebuild overview, but it's not the most pleasant 
experience ever, and it doesn't help us figure out what is actually wrong.

I wonder if it would help to try the commands manually and see where 
exactly the problem is.  So telnet to port 119 of your news server and 
issue MODE READER, GROUP, XHDR, and some HEAD commands as demonstrated 
below.  The lines starting with those commands are the ones I typed, and 
everything else is the server's response.  I've added some whitespace to 
make it more clear where the separate commands are.
